IMPEDIMENTS

shut all the windows on a hot summer day

and turn up the heat,

put on big wool mittens and pet the cat,

go swimming in overalls and raincoat,

put on earplugs and listen to the wind-chimes,

sniff the roses in a gas mask,

put on welding goggles and look at the stars,

strap a sack of cement on your back and dance,

stuff your mouth with cotton and sing —

then you’ll know how I feel when I’m not barefoot.
