From: Graham Long Subject: Cairns is a Barefooter's paradise Date: Sat, 31 Aug 1996 10:19:49 GMT Was recently in Cairns (Queensland, Australia) for the week at a conference. Cairns is a city of about 130,000. Great place. From what I saw, about 5% of the locals just normally go about their business barefoot in this town (this was in the downtown area, so it probably is greater overall). This made the city feel very welcoming, as I just blended into the scene (unlike some other places I've travelled). Zero hassles anywhere, shops, banks, bars or casual restaurants. In shops, often one or more of the staff was barefoot, or else there were other barefooter customers. We even had a barefooter presenting one of the papers at the conference. I happened to be going past a junior school at going home time, and a quick count showed that 50%+ of the school pupils appear to go barefoot to school. Barefooting is alive & well in Cairns. I reckon its a good place to consider for a holiday. -------------------------------------------------------------- Graham Long "Barfota i skogen"
