From: Ken Saxton Subject: Re: Where did you barefoot today? Date: Mon, 02 Dec 1996 16:17:34 -0800 I just returned from a week in Southern Florida, where the weather was perfect for barefooting. Came back home to Sunny Southern California to almost freezing mornings. Still going smoothly at work. Barefoot most of the time. A temporary typist expressed her shock ("That guy's barefoot!") to the Dean's secretary. The secretary just laughed and relayed the story to me, and said she thought it was cool that I work barefoot. Another day the Associate Vice President expressed his shock that I had shoes on (it was a cold morning and I left my shoes on that day). The custodians have ceased giving the old "staples and tacks on the floor" warning each time they see me barefoot. On rainy days in the past, wearing shoes and socks, my feet were wet and cold and I would suffer the sniffles all day long. A couple weeks ago it rained. I rode my bicycle and worked barefoot. I was in and out of the rain many times. Within seconds after stepping inside from the rain, my feet would dry, and I only had a couple sniffles throughout the day. Some students seem truely surprised that the bottoms of my feet aren't full of holes and sores, especially after they find out I also run barefoot. I guess it is typical of many people to overestimate the risks and underestimate the pleasure of going barefoot (and, I'm sure, of many of life's other experiences). -ken common sense is frequently nonsense real sense is rarely common
