Dear Mr. Shakely,
Thank you for your letter of June 16, 1997 to request information on a health requirement that shoes be worn in supermarkets, restaurants, etc.
In Delaware, the regulations which the Division of Public Health applies to restaurants and supermarkets are called "The State of Delaware Regulations Governing Public Eating Places." These regulations do not contain a specific requirement which mandates that shoes be worn by customers of food vendors. Furthermore, our state laws contain no such requirement. However, business owners have the legal right to post such notices on their properties. This action is usually done in the best interest of the general public.
Good luck with your academic project. Please feel free to contact David Rodeheaver, Manager, Office of Food Protection, directly at (302) 739-4731 for more information.
Sincerely,
Gregg C. Sylvester, MD, MPH Director |
