Dear Mr. Shakely:
Your letter to Richard D. Feldman, M.D., State Health Commissioner, concerning signs posted at retail food establishments stating that shoes must be worn "by order of the health department," was forwarded to me for response because the retail food program is located in my commission. Our food program occasionally receives such inquiries.
There is no state or federal law or rule that requires that shoes be worn by customers in retails food establishments. Often, restaurant operators post such signs to serve their own purposes.
If you have further questions concerning food service issues, please contact Mr. Robert Jump, the Indiana State Department of Health Food Protection manager, at the above address or at (317) 233-7467.
Sincerely,
Arthur L. Logsdon
