Dear Mr. Rupprecht:

Thank you for your recent letter requesting information about any laws that require patrons to wear shoes or other footwear in places open to the public, such as restaurants, retail establishments, libraries, schools, etc.

I have also observed the signs you refer to that state, "Shoes required by the order of the Health Department." I am not aware of any state rule or law or any local ordinance that requires this. This does not, however, preclude local levels of government, such as counties, townships, or cities from passing and enforcing ordinances to that effect.
