Health Department

THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is supposedly the most free country in the world; yet, from discussions with barefooters around the world, the USA is one of the most anti-barefoot countries. Many people in the USA have seen signs like:

NO BARE FEET
by Order of the Health Department

Such signs are outright lies. To prove it, in 1997, several members volunteered to write to the health departments of every state in the U.S. In 2002, there was another round of letter writing to get updated responses, and a third round was done in 2009. For the few states that didn't respond to that round of writing, efforts were continued to get a response from every state, which was successful. So, currently, we have answers from the health departments (and/or agriculture departments as may apply) of all 50 states dated 2009 or later, and all confirm there are no state health department regulations requiring footwear in any business.

The responses from the states at various times are available below in Adobe PDF format and can be printed and carried for easy reference when out and about. In each letter, the name of the addressee is shown, but personal address information has been removed for privacy.
