Barefoot in the Park
FOR SOME NORTHERN CALIFORNIA HIKERS, WALKING BAREFOOT
is the ultimate rocky mountain high.
Shoeless joes already have their own clubs like the
East Bay Barefoot Hikers
and a "Dirty Soles" Internet discussion group
(http://www.barefooters.org).
There's even an anti-boot bible,
Richard Frazine's
"The Barefoot Hiker," with chapter titles like
"Autumn: Special Pleasure, Special Cautions."
According to EBBH founder Mike Berrow,
no one has yet gotten poison oak or stepped on a snake.
"The snakes don't hear us coming,
so we usually see them before they see us."
