It’s not just a metaphor. Courtney Cauthon, the Barefoot Historian, does not wear shoes while offering walking tours about Carlisle, PA’s history.
How did it begin? A tour guest informed her that she did not have historically accurate shoes. Valuing historical accuracy Cauthon decided to forego shoes for a time. People noticed, loved it and began calling her the “Barefoot Historian.” The name and choice stuck.

Matteo Grasso, a 25 year old farmer from Somerset, is in training to run the equivalent of more than three marathons in three days without shoes.
